Sheath Loss Calculation and Loss Reduction Analysis of 220 kV Cable System

Reducing loss in high-voltage cable transmission lines is crucial to improve the power transmission efficiency of the power systems. This paper reports a method for calculating sheath loss in the sheath cross-bonded cable systems. Subsequently, a 220 kV, three-phase, single-core, cross-bonded cable system is used as a simulation case in PSCAD-EMTP to investigate the sheath loss under different subsection's lengths and cable arrangements. The calculations indicate that in the case of a uniform arrangement, the sheath loss is minimized and approaches zero when each subsection is of equal length. Furthermore, in the case of mixed arrangement, the sheath loss is affected by both the lengths and arrangements of cable subsections. The sheath loss can be reduced by approximately 4

to 19% compared to subsections of equal length by selecting the appropriate length ratio and arrangement depending on the cable operating conditions.
