Analysis and Comparison of Sub/Super-Synchronous Oscillation Source Location Methods

Accurate location of the source of sub/super-synchronous oscillation (SSO) based on online measurements is critical to effective emergency control when SSO occurs. The impedance method and the transient energy flow (TEF) method are two common methods for SSO source location in the literature. The paper first analyzes the theoretical foundation of the two methods based on the passivity theory, and elucidates the rationality of both methods. Then, the differences between the two methods in damping evaluation are studied. The impedance method takes the sum of super-synchronous power and sub-synchronous power as the rate of energy dissipation, while in the TEF method the the rate of energy dissipation is proportional to the difference between the two. Finally, the efficacy of the two methods for forced oscillation source location is tested through the utilization of eletromagnetic transient simulations. The results demonstrate that the TEF method achieves relatively high accuracy, while both methods still require further improvement.
