Performance Improvement of Hybrid RoF and RoFSO System under High Atmospheric Turbulence

RoF and RoFSO are emerging as technologies of interest to generate millimeter (mm) waves in optical domain and to provide solutions for access networks in 5G and 6G mobile services. There are different mm wave frequency bands, which have been standardized or in process of standardization for different applicatuions. This paper analyses the performance of propagation of 60 GHz mm-wave frequency over hybrid radio over fiber (RoF) and radio over free space optic (RoFSO) system under high atmospheric turbulence. The 60 GHz mm-wave frequency is generated in the optical domain using an analog approach of optical double sideband (ODSB) with partial carrier suppression (PCS). The RoF is used to extend the transmission reach and RoFSO for last-mile connectivity or access network. This paper also explores the use of non-return to zero inverted (NRZI) source encoding in improving the performance of the considered system under high atmospheric turbulence. A comparison of different edge shapes of NRZ and RZ modulation formats has also been explored.
