Design of 8×8 Phased Array Antenna for Sub-6 GHz 5G Automotive Wireless Communications

5G provides the enhanced channel capacity, extended coverage and reliable connection for the user terminal for both terrestrial and non-terrestrial automotive communications. Phased array antenna with beamforming capability is prominent solution to maintain the connection in the moving vehicle. This paper describes and analyze the 8$\times$8 asymmetric U-slot patch antenna array along with beamforming capability. The design resonates at 3.5 GHz which is the part of sub-6 GHz frequency band dedicated for 5G wireless communication. The proposed array provides the gain of 22.7 dB which ensures the significant improvement in data rate according to link budget calculations. The beamforming feature of the proposed design demonstrates the ±30° beam shift with the scan angle of ±40°. The performance parameters of the proposed design are suitable for various automotive wireless use cases.
