Modeling and Simulation of Crowbar Protection Technique for Doubly Fed Induction Generator under Symmetrical Fault Condition

This paper investigates the protection schemes for a Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) when subjected to a fault. A Crowbar protection technique is proposed to mitigate the effects of voltage dip on the DFIG system. Three different crowbar topologies are designed, and their impact on the DFIG system’s electrical magnitudes, such as currents, voltages, and torques is evaluated. The work demonstrates the proposed crowbar protection technique can effectively enhance the DFIG system’s low-voltage ride-through capability and reduce the stress on the rotor-side converter.
