Smart tracking system (STS) for site workers

This study aims to design, develop, and test a smart safety helmet, i.e., Smart Tracking System (STS) that will further enhance and provide greater safety to the worker during field hours and limit the number of accidents the worker may experience. STS is designed using affordable microcontroller namely, Arduino and several sensors, and is intrinsically safe. STS has four key advantages. First, it can monitor the location of the worker using GPS. Secondly, a shock sensor can monitor the worker's health. In the event of a severe blow or fall to the head, the supervisor can check on the worker and identify if he or she is in difficulty. Thirdly, a gas sensor is attached to the worker's helmet to alert him/her if the surrounding air is hazardous to breathe. Finally, an emergency button is integrated to contact the management in the event of an emergency requiring immediate attention by a worker. The conducted validation tests demonstrate the applicability of the affordable design of STS as a smart safety and security system.
