Zero Sequence and Ground Current Analysis of Dual Source Open-End Winding PMSM Drive System

This paper proposes an analysis and design of the grounding configuration for a dual source open-end winding (DS-OEW) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system. Many previous research studies on the DS-OEW drive system have neglected the grounding of both sources together, thereby eliminating concerns related to zero sequence (ZS) components. However, considering practical applicability, the grounding configuration of both sources is necessary to address electromagnetic interferences and safety issues. When the grounding configuration is incorporated into the DS-OEW drive system, it is no longer free from ZS components, and the ZS current may flow through the ground current. This paper introduces the ZS model of the DS-OEW system and presents an impedance-based design method for the DS-OEW ground configuration to minimize the ZS current. The proposed design demonstrates diminished ZS current compared to that of the conventional grounding parameters The validity of the proposed analysis and design procedure for grounding is demonstrated through simulations and experiments.
