Time Series Analyses for Sentinel-2 NDVI on Mangroves in Northwestern Mexico (2016-2022)

We employed the most recent version of our open source software ‘Tools for Analyzing Time Series of Satellite Imagery (TATSSI)’ to analyze a Sentinel-2 monthly NDVI time series from 2016 to 2022 recorded at Bahia Magdalena (BM), Baja California Sur, Mexico. Our analyses on the NDVI’s dynamics allowed us to discuss the apparent gain and loss of mangrove’s vegetation in some polygons of interest. As to for the whole BM’s mangrove vegetation, we found significant increasing and decreasing linear trends in 31 and 8% of the area, respectively. In addition to these gradual changes in the NDVI, we determined the spatiotemporal distribution of their abrupt changes; our approach determined 2017 as the year with the most area affected by an abrupt change. In passing, we also discussed the new features of TATSSI as well as its performance across several computational systems.
