Database Fundamentals

Databases are the core technology for storing much of the data we use in our work and personal lives. This chapter discusses the different types of databases. Just as organizations and individuals have unique data storage needs, there are different types of databases to choose from that best accommodate these diverse needs. The chapter explores relational database and nonrelational database. It describes common NoSQL database categories as well as the difference between linear and nonlinear data. Object‐relational mapping (ORM) is a technique that presents relational data as objects in an object‐oriented programming language. ORM lets developers work with data stored in relational databases using object‐oriented programming languages. There is at least one ORM framework for every object‐oriented programming language. The chapter discusses the impact of using an ORM framework.
