Speeding Up the AV1 Global Warped Motion Compensation

AV1 is a video coding format defined by big techs to be massively used in current and future commercial video applications. AV1 presents several new and complex tools aiming at a diversity of video scenarios. One of these tools is the Global Warped Motion Compensation (GWMC), which is responsible for capturing non-translational movement, such as rotation and zoom, mainly caused by camera movements. This work presents six solutions to reduce the encoding time of GWMC while keeping the coding efficiency impact near zero. One of the solutions is capable of reducing the tool execution time by more than 25% presenting a small gain of -0.02% in BD-BR. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work in the literature focusing on reducing the computational effort of the AV1 GWMC.
