Exploring the impact of parental involvement on student academic achievement in China

Parents play a crucial role in their children's growth and development, acting as their first teachers in life. They not only establish a close parent-child relationship but also contribute to fostering a positive attitude towards learning and nurturing beneficial study habits. This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between parental involvement and student academic achievement using a data-driven approach. The data for this research is drawn from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS), a comprehensive nationwide survey project developed and executed by the China Survey and Data Center (NSRC) at Renmin University of China. Different from previous studies, our research focuses on three aspects of parental involvement and their impact on children's academic performance. These three facets encompass emotional involvement, non-emotional involvement, and underlying factors, all of which are utilized to predict variations in student academic achievement. We can draw the following conclusion: (1)Parental involvement has a positive causal effect on students' academic achievement. (2)Emotional support, learning guidance, and the provision of family education resources have varying degrees of impact on academic achievement. (3)Other potential factors play a moderating role in the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement.
