Design and Analysis of a Linear Arc PM Vernier Generator for Wave Energy Conversion System

Ocean wave energy has progressively been acknowledged as the most sustainable and ecologically sound means of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. This article proposes multiple distinctive linear arc generator concepts for converting wave energy into electrical power. This study successfully addresses the issues of high cogging force, low output power, massive size, and mechanical integrity by combining the concepts of arc and linear vernier machines. For varying PM volumes and slot/pole combinations, two separate designs with the same dimensions as the base design have been created and assessed. Analysis is done by successfully comparing the proposed designs with the conventional designs. Results show a 28.47 % increase in flux linkage for design M2, and a 32.50 % increase in flux linkage for design M4 as compared to the conventional design. Results demonstrate a 37.16% reduction of cogging force for design M1 and a 54.58% reduced cogging force for design M3 as compared to conventional design. The designs also possess reduced current densities as compared to conventional designs. Generator analysis of designs illustrated an increase of 86.14% of the increase in output power for design M4, 79.98% of the increase in output power for design M2, 6.22% of increase in output power for design M1, and 53.72% of the increase in output power for design M3, respectively.
