Distribution Feeder Reconfiguration Using Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm-Based Framework

Traditional power distribution systems encounter challenges due to day-by-day increasing demand and aging infrastructure, resulting in power losses, low end voltages and service disruptions. In response, distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) has emerged as a promising solution. DFR involves strategically adjusting the connection status of distribution feeders to optimize system performance, enhance reliability, and improve power flow characteristics. This research focuses on devising an effective DFR solution using an advanced Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm-based framework. By judiciously opening or closing switches, the proposed approach aims to achieve voltage profile enhancement and reduction in power losses. These improvements collectively elevate the overall performance, efficiency, and reliability of distribution systems. Validation of the proposed approach is conducted through MATLAB simulations on the widely recognized IEEE 33-bus test system. Optimal Power Flow (OPF) results, employing the novel Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (AHA) are analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed DFR strategy. Using AHA based DFR framework, power losses are reduced up to 33.355% with the improvement in minimum bus voltage of 4.033% (in p.u.).
