Technical and economic evaluation of a grid connected hybrid system in Gazipur, Bangladesh

At present following COVID-19 and RussiaUkraine war, Bangladesh is facing challenges to meet the electricity demand despite having a good amount of installed capacity. Since, most of the power plants of this country are run by natural gas, oil and coal, and the fuel prices are increasing day by day, initiatives are taken by the government and private companies to search for alternative fuel and sustainable energy sources and systems. Keeping in mind the environmental pollution and GHG emission, solar, wind, biomass and hydro based power plants can be feasible instead of fossil fuel based power plants. In this paper, a techno-economic evaluation of a grid connected hybrid system has been performed in the central part of the country. Firstly, the hybrid system is modeled with the existing diesel generator connected to the grid. Then available resources are described with techno-economic optimization in HOMER PRO. Results show that solar PV and wind generators can well replace the need of the back-up diesel generator. It is also found that the project can help to attain economic benefit by selling 7.59% excess electricity and reduce GHG emission by incorporating 60.6% renewable energy to the grid.
