Escalating the performance of Diesel Engine and Combustion Attributes Via Algae Biodiesel and Hydrogen Enrichment

This study focuses on the synthesis of biodiesel from algae, sourced from Bhojpur, Mahadev Temple, Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, to create a 20% algae biodiesel (A20) blend with 80% diesel. The impact of hydrogen enrichment in diesel and algae biodiesel blends was evaluated on a Mahindra Supro turbocharged BSIV engine. Performance and combustion characteristics were analyzed using the base diesel fuel and various biodiesel blends in conjunction with hydrogen. Performance parameters, including Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE), Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC), and exhaust gas temperature, were investigated when using the A20 blend. Results indicated that the BTE for pure diesel (D100) and A20 were 34.99% and 34.25%, respectively. The SFC for D100 and A20 blends were 0.242 g/kWh and 0.250 g/kWh, respectively. Hydrogen enrichment of the A20 blend was performed at different levels (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by volume). The findings revealed that hydrogen enrichment significantly improved engine performance and combustion in a compression ignition (CI) engine. BTE increased by 4.1%, and SFC decreased by 36.20% with 20% volume of hydrogen enrichment compared to A20 fuel. Moreover, cylinder pressure and temperature exhibited improvements of 8.57% and 11.98%, respectively, compared to the A20 biodiesel blend. This study underscores the positive impact of hydrogen enrichment on engine performance and combustion behavior, demonstrating its potential in enhancing the efficiency of diesel engines.
