Optimal Dispatch of the Power System in a Chinese Province Considering Carbon Capture and Storage

Under the coal-based energy structure, the power industry accounts for the highest proportion of carbon emissions in China. To achieve the ambitious dual carbon goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, China’s power system is accelerating the pace of low-carbon and clean transformation. To achieve the optimal economic operation of the power system, an optimal dispatch model with the minimum operating cost as the optimization objective is established in this paper. Based on planned capacity data of power units in a Chinese Province’s power system from 2025 to 2050, the hourly power output of all power sources is optimized under two scenarios: integrating coal-fired units with carbon capture and storage (CCS), conventional coal-fired units without CCS integration. Research results show that the annual utilization hours of coal-fired units integrated with CCS (CF-CCS) are much higher than those of conventional coal-fired units (CCF). And CF-CCS substantially reduce carbon emissions for the power system. In 2050, when all coal-fired units are integrated with CCS, the carbon emissions of the power system are reduced by 88.10% 10 to the scenario without integration of coal-fired units and CCS.
