Analysis and Modelling of seven-level packed U-cell multilevel inverter for solar PV application

The increasing demand for the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into contemporary power grids has propelled the development of advanced power electronics solutions, including multilevel inverters. Among these, the Packed U-cell inverter gained significant attention due to its potential to efficiently convert and control power derived from renewable sources. This paper presents the seven-level packed U-cell topology consisting of six switches with dual voltage sources. The controlling Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques used are low frequency and high frequency such as Nearest level control (NLC) and Level shift respectively are employed to check the performance of the circuit. The loss analysis is examined through thermal modeling done in PLECS software. Though the efficiency achieved all around the inverter is about 97%. Consequently, the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) analysis is carried out with a thorough comparison of both the controlling techniques along with the Total standing voltage (TSV) of an inverter. To check the viability of the presented circuit, the performance of the circuit is examined under different loading conditions.
