Design and Development of Dual Port Polarized Microstrip Patch Antenna for Breast Tumor Detection

This work proposes a near-field ISM band dual port polarized antenna for detecting tumors in the female breast. The concept employs a dual port polarized antenna that shows a narrow frequency response in the 2.45 GHz ISM frequency band, which is highly sensitive to changes in the breast tissue’s electromagnetic properties. The existence of a tumor is determined by measuring the magnitude and phase response variations of the received signal. Simultaneously monitoring tissue quality changes by two such antennas for reflected and refracted waves is a crucial element of our proposed detection paradigm. Artificial tumors inserted in a breast phantom composed of soft tissue like petroleum jelly are utilized to verify the proposed antenna’s performance. Using the proposed antennas experimental findings of three different sizes of metallic spheres that represent tumors were implanted within the phantom and simulated. The outcomes of the numerical tests and experiments strongly imply that the detection method described here may result in a low-cost, portable, early-detection method and routine screening for breast tumors.
