Surface deformation monitoring and potential geological hazard identification of pumped storage power station based on time-series InSAR

Pumped storage technology is mature and stable, with high comprehensive benefits, and it is the most mature and largest installed energy storage method in the world. Pumped storage hydropower stations face challenging conditions during construction, requiring careful monitoring of surface deformations and early detection of hidden geological risks. The Interferometric Point Target Analysis (IPTA) technique is a promising method for measuring deformations using InSAR technology. IPTA is different from the traditional differential interferometric radar measurement method in that it is less affected by the loss of coherence and atmospheric delay, so the results obtained are more accurate and reliable. Using the RADARSAT-2 data from June 2020 to August 2023, deformation monitoring was carried out for Chongqing Panglong Pumped Storage Power Station and its surrounding area, and we finally found the surface deformation rate in the area ranging from -50 mm/y to 67 mm/y, with the overall area being stable, and deciphered eight hidden hazard areas with safety hazards. The results also provide technical support and safety guarantee during the construction of pumped storage power stations, and provide a new technical means for the deformation monitoring and early warning of reservoir area of reservoir dams.
