Peak Load Truncation From Consumer End: A Responsive Temperature Control Method of an Air Conditioner

To cope with the uprising global demand of electricity, it is crucial to implement energy saving methods from the consumer end. Increasing electricity production is limited by the availability of fuel and other resources, which is not a feasible approach without increasing the efficiency of the system. This work proposes an energy saving method for air conditioning systems through controlling the set temperature, which can be implemented by the consumer and can effectively reduce energy demand during the peak hours and in case of other demand response (DR) events. A responsive temperature control for air conditioning systems has been proposed in this work along with hardware implementation in a miniaturized model. The results show 15.6 % overall energy savings during peak hours for the simulation conditions, along with 8.3 % energy savings by the air conditioning unit per °C increase in set temperature. Challenges include implementing the proposed system in real life scenario and integrating the system in existing air conditioning systems.
