Development and Implementation of an IoT-enabled Real-time Cold Storage Monitoring and Notification System

Cold storage is crucial for the economy of Bangladesh, as it plays a vital role in the preservation of perishable products for extended periods. However, most cold storage facilities in Bangladesh are controlled manually, creating a risk of spoilage or contamination of preserved goods. Therefore, it is essential to intelligently monitor storage systems to enhance the efficiency of cold storage. This paper aims to develop a real-time monitoring and notification system for a cold storage system using IoT and an Android application. We begin by creating a prototype cold storage chamber and installing essential sensors for gases, temperature, humidity, and light. Arduino UNO and NodeMCU are integrated to produce the smart IoT-based system. Then, real-time online data storage and a mobile Android application have been developed for cold storage monitoring. The efficacy of the proposed smart cold storage system is evaluated through comprehensive testing conducted on an interactive Android application. It shows the overall state based on parameters directly influencing the cold storage process, enabling users to gain quick insights into the operational status. It also facilitates the control of the exhaust fan to manage the gas concentration. Additionally, real-time readings of all sensor data are displayed, which aids in making timely and informed decisions. The system provides a comprehensive overview of the cold storage process and provides users with the tools needed to monitor and control key aspects effectively. Our system is expected to assist cold storage authorities in reducing labor costs and minimizing the risk of spoilage, contamination, or other safety hazards.
