UCA-based OAM-MIMO scheme for high-capacity wireless transmission

In view of the increasing scarcity of available spectrum resources and the increasing demand for wireless transmission in the future, a new wireless transmission scheme that combines orbital angular momentum (OAM) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is proposed. The physical layer model for a uniform circular array (UCA) based OAM-MIMO wireless transmission system is analyzed. The corresponding channel model is established by using the reference coordinate system associated with each transmitting antenna and the cumulative phase related to per OAM carrier. Basing on the channel model, the capacity and energy efficiency of the system are numerically investigated. It is found that compared with the traditional MIMO scheme, the capacity, energy efficiency and transmission reliability in the OAM-MIMO scheme have been greatly improved. The great application potential of UCA-based OAM-MIMO transmission strategy in meeting the explosive growth of wireless traffic in future is therefore revealed from a physical layer point of view.
