IoT-based Healthcare Device with Hybrid Cryptography for Enhanced Security in Patient Data Management

The advent of the IoT has revolutionized healthcare by introducing smart connected devices. This abstract presents an IoT-based healthcare device designed for comprehensive patient monitoring. The device integrates state-of-the-art sensors including the MAX30100 for precise measurement of oxygen levels and pulse rate as well as the AD8232 ECG sensor for monitoring electrocardiograms and the LM35 for tracking patient temperature. A $16\times 2$ LCD provides real-time data display offering immediate insights into the patient’s health status. The ESP32 microcontroller facilitates data collection and transmission to a MERN stack-based web application. To ensure the security and integrity of patient data the system employs hybrid cryptography for secure storage. The hybrid cryptography mechanism leverages the advantages of both symmetric and asymmetric encryption techniques for optimal security enhancing data protection. The web application accessible by authorized administrators allows for updating patient information including name, age, gender, height, weight, and BMI. However, users are restricted to viewing data and cannot alter patient entries. An additional access request page enables users to export collected data into a CSV file and subsequent requests for dataset access trigger notifications to the main administrator for approval. The research investigates multiple encryption algorithms to assess their performance in terms of encryption and decryption time and complexity. By the end of this study the healthcare device aims to provide a secure user-friendly and technologically advanced solution for patient monitoring contributing to the evolution of IoT in healthcare.
