Denoising of photoplethysmograms for cuffless blood pressure estimation via Empirical Mode Decomposition based bit plane method

Photoplethesmograms (PPGs) are the human signals that harbor an abundant information about the cardiovascular system. However, it is susceptible to the background noise and the motion artifacts. In this case, the quality of the PPGs is severely degraded. As a result, the poor estimation performance will be resulted. To address this issue, this paper proposes an Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD) based bit plane method to mitigate the noise contaminated in the PPGs. Through computer numerical simulation, as the signal quality is enhanced, our proposed method has shown superior accuracy in cuffless blood pressure estimation compared to traditional EMD and variational mode decomposition (VMD) based methods.
