Design and Implementation of a non-PWM DC-DC Boost Converter in SkyWater Technology

DC-DC power converters have become an integral part in various commercial and industrial applications with an ever-increasing need for efficient power management. Modern electronic systems often demand several different voltage levels due to the plethora of subsystem modules. A non-PWM novel boost converter topology is proposed that can deliver sufficiently high load currents (on the order of tens of mAs) while maintaining a high output voltage. The circuit can also operate with a low inductance, low quality, on-chip inductor, thus eliminating the need for external circuit board components. The proposed topology has been implemented alongside its on-chip inductor in SkyWater 130nm technology, exhibiting a maximum efficiency of 82% and operating at battery voltage levels as low as 0.7 V while supplying 8.6 mA at 1.55 V at the output.
