Comparison of Requirements Engineering Methods for IoT-based Systems: A Systematic Mapping Study

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging field and refers to things equipped with electronic devices, software, and sensors that communicate with each other and exchange data over the Internet. Due to the inherent characteristics of IoT-based systems, such as network, software, hardware, context awareness, interoperability, etc., requirements engineering for these systems is complex. In fact, it is not possible to use the requirements engineering methods of traditional systems for these systems. In this paper, we review and compare some of the methods introduced in the literature. We conducted a systematic mapping study to find papers and then compared the methods introduced in them from two aspects: the different stages of requirements engineering supported by these methods and the methods used in them to elicit the requirements. The results show that most of the methods focus on the requirements elicitation stage and mainly use scenario and interview methods to elicit the requirements.
