Determination of Car Deformation due to the Car Crash using Close-Range Photogrammetry

Measurements obtained from car accidents provide beneficial information about the crash behavior and performance. In this paper, the possibilities of applying smartphone photogrammetry in measuring deformations after the collision of vehicles are analyzed. For this purpose, the deformations of the car after the crash are measured by comparison between crashed and non-crashed models. Accordingly, images were taken from different angles, and the reconstruction of the car after the crash (damaged model), and before the crash (undamaged model) were carried out. Then, the displacements were extracted by comparing the registered damaged and undamaged models. According to the experimental results, the photogrammetry based on smartphones can be applied for car deformation analysis.
