Impact of Different Hypervisor Versions on the File System Performance: Case Study with VirtualBox

The focus of this paper is the file system performance comparison of different versions/generations of the same hypervisor. VirtualBox was chosen as the role of hypervisor, while the generation 5th, 6th and 7th with representative versions 5.2.44, 6.1.46 and 7.0.10 were selected. We selected the Filebench as benchmark program for testing. Filebench is very flexible and it enables the simulation of real application/server behavior. Ubuntu 22.10, an operating system representative of the Linux family, was used in the role of the guest operating system. Our tests were performed for one, two and three virtual machines running simultaneously. This paper includes the mathematical model of virtual environment, then the real experiment as a specific case study, and we use of the model for the results interpretation.
