A Simple-Structured Dual-Polarized Staggered Array With Enhanced Isolation at E- and H-Planes

This communication proposes a dual-polarized staggered array with a simple structure and high isolation for base station applications. The dual-polarized array is composed of self-decoupling antennas and an array antenna decoupling surface (ADS). By bending full-wavelength dipoles to create mixed-electromagnetic coupling, the antennas can be self-decoupled without introducing extra structures. The E-plane isolation is improved by approximately 17 dB compared to conventional arrays. Furthermore, a single-layer ADS is codesigned with the E-plane self-decoupling antenna to simultaneously achieve H-plane decoupling between dual-polarized elements. For demonstration, a five-element dual-polarized staggered array is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured result shows that at frequencies ranging from 3.3 to 3.7 GHz, the efficiency of elements is above 87%, and the gain of each element is higher than 5.6 dBi. Owing to the proposed decoupling technique, the array achieves isolation of 25 dB at both E- and H-planes while maintaining a simple structure.
