Assessing the Feasibility of Cuffless Pulse Wave Velocity Measurement: A Preliminary Study Using Bioimpedance and Sphygmomanometer

This preliminary study investigates the feasibility of using bioimpedance signals for non-invasive, continuous monitoring of pulse wave velocity (PWV). The research compares the Pulse Arriving Time (PAT) calculated from bioimpedance signals with the PAT measured by the Vasera VS-1500 device, a reliable tool for PWV measurement. The bioimpedance signals, significantly influenced by small arteries and their branches, were calculated and averaged over the inhalation and exhalation phases. The results showed a considerable variability between the two methods, with the percentage difference ranging from as low as 0.18% to as high as 27.30

The findings suggest that it is feasible to use bioimpedance signals to calculate PAT, but further refinement of the bioimpedance measurement technique is needed to improve its accuracy and reliability.
