Development of a Portable Respiratory Rate Monitoring System for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common medical condition characterized by temporary cessation of breathing during sleep. It is a serious condition that can lead to quality of life problems and various health disorders up to sudden death. This paper presents the development of a respiratory rate monitoring device to detect and monitor sleep apnea. The goal of the study was to develop a compact and portable device capable of continuously and accurately measuring respiratory rate throughout the sleep period. To achieve this goal, a special sensor was developed to monitor chest movements and detect changes in respiratory rhythm. The results of the study confirm the effectiveness and accuracy of the device in detecting sleep apnea. Experiments were conducted on a group of volunteers, including patients with diagnosed sleep apnea, as well as healthy control subjects. The prototype device demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity of the obtained data. The proposed device has potential for use in clinical practice and at home for long-term monitoring of respiratory rate in patients with suspected sleep apnea. Such monitoring can be useful in determining the effectiveness of treatment and adaptation of patients to the therapies used. The article concludes with a discussion of possibilities for improvement of the device, including its integration with existing medical systems, development of data processing algorithms, and further clinical trials involving more patients.
