UAV based Topographic Survey of Inaccessible Remote Terrains

Remote terrains, bring forth distinct challenges for comprehensive surveys, which are intensified by accessibility issues and ecological considerations. Velliyamkallu island, situated 36 kilometers from Kozhikode, Kerala, remains largely uncharted, yet carries latent potential for selective development. This study employed UAV drone-based surveying, a strategic response to remote terrain exploration, to produce detailed topographical data of the island. Multi-altitude flights enriched our topographical insights, while concurrent bathymetric studies highlighted underwater depth variations. The ensuing data suggests that while large-scale development may not be feasible, the island could support specific ventures such as maritime relay towers, emergency hubs for fishing vessels, and select water sport activities. This study enriches the academic discourse on Velliyamkallu island and provides pragmatic recommendations for sustainable development. Importantly, the adept utilization of UAVs in this study underscores their invaluable role in examining remote landscapes, thus offering a template for future endeavors.
