Evaluation of Chandrayaan-2 IIRS data for Lunar Surface Exploration

Lunar surface mineral mapping provides important information of the origin, evolution and composition of the moon’s surface. The minerals can be identified by the absorption features that are generally prominent in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Here we demonstrate the compositional mapping of lunar surface mineralogy using Chandrayaan-2 Imaging Infrared Spectrometer (IIRS), Level-1 data of a Glauber crater. Photometric correction on IIRS data was performed and converted to reflectance. In order to evaluate the results of IIRS, Chandrayaan-1 Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), Level-4 data of the same crater was also used for comparative study. Band shaping algorithms was used to calculate band parameters from both the data to make an enhanced false colour composite to identify minerals. We were able to identify most of the lunar mafic minerals. The results of IIRS data is found comparable with M3 data.
