A New Security Mechanism for MIL-STD-1553 Using Authenticated Encryption Algorithms

MIL-STD-1553 serves as a pivotal communication standard within the aerospace and defense domains, specifying a data exchange protocol for avionic systems on military platforms. It features a dual-redundant serial data bus, establishing reliable and robust communication architectures for mission-critical systems. Recent research on MIL-STD-1553's security reveals vulnerabilities in its architecture, particularly due to the transmission of data in plaintext and without any authentication on the bus. The objective is to advance data security services for critical satellite systems to mitigate vulnerabilities associated with MIL-STD-1553. This paper aims to provide a new security mechanism for the MIL-STD-1553 protocol using an authenticated encryption algorithm, specifically the Parallel Cipher-based Message Authentication Code. The goal is to enhance data security in critical satellite systems, reducing potential risks associated with the standard by ensuring data authentication, integrity, and confidentiality for transmitted data over the bus. The proposed design is implemented using VHDL and simulated using the ISim simulator.
