Meaningful Communication of Museum Artifacts through the Integration of Digital Features into Physical Replicas

The aspect of touching museum artifacts has gained increasing prominence in the field of museum studies in recent decades, as museums strive to create more engaging experiences for visitors. With the advent of digital fabrication technologies, museums have embraced the practice of 3D printing and reproducing physical replicas of artifacts. These replicas serve various purposes, including facilitating artifact interpretation, replacing fragile or damaged artifacts, educating children, and enhancing the experience of visually impaired visitors. However, a haptic experience alone may not fully engage and educate visitors. By integrating digital features into physical replicas, museums can provide access to a wealth of information and create immersive encounters. This study investigates the seamless integration of digital technologies into physical replicas and its impact on meaningful communication and visitor engagement. We analyzed 24 interactive museum prototypes that integrate digital features into physical replicas, revealing the potential for meaningful communication through this integration. We present an ongoing matrix as a steppingstone in this endeavor, and highlighted various benefits and considerations associated with the integration of digital features into physical replicas, as well as its cultural, social, and educational impact.
