Improvement of a Two-Tier ATM Security System: Aiming to Deliver a Timely Resolution for Network Challenges

In the current context, there has been a notable surge in criminal activities related to Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs). Over the past few years, criminals have become increasingly sophisticated, focusing their efforts on exploiting vulnerabilities in ATMs. The main security issue with Indian ATMs is their reliance on a single authentication technique, which leaves them open to many types of attacks such shoulder surfing, shimming, skimming, and card cloning. This has elevated apprehensions about the overall security of ATMs. Acknowledging these vulnerabilities, numerous banks have adopted a more robust two-tier authentication system.In recent times, certain banks in India have introduced a Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) system, which combines a Unique Identifier (UID) and a One-Time Password (OTP) for ATM transactions. But this raises a fresh worry about OTP delivery's reliance on the cellular network. Researchers have suggested a thorough two-tier authentication system to overcome these problems. The paper delves into contemporary challenges associated with ATM security and presents a solution through a robust two-way authentication approach. Furthermore, to mitigate network-related issues, the researchers have introduced an innovative Security Question based confirmation mechanism.
