Simulation Study of Borda and Rogowski Profile Electrodes to Assess Electric Field Uniformity

In plasma applications, electric field uniformity is a vital parameter for electrodes to hold high voltage in a very small discharge volume. Ideal uniform electric fields can be produced by infinite parallel electrodes. However, uniform fields are realized by profiling electrodes in geometries like Borda and Rogowski profiles in practice. The purpose of this simulation study is to assess the electric field uniformity of Borda and Rogowski profiles in COMSOL and CST software packages. In this paper, the electric field uniformity over the electrode surface is studied. Furthermore, the electric field across the gap of Borda and Rogowski electrodes is evaluated as the distance between the electrode and electrode diameter changes. Consequently, the electric field over the electrode surface in the Borda profile is more uniform than in the Rogowski profile. The computed results from the simulation study of these profile electrodes in CST and COMSOL are also compared.
