Modeling the Latest Liner Implosions on the Phelix Pulsed Power System

The Precision High Energy-density Liner Implosion eXperiment (PHELIX) has recently fielded several experiments with a new, single-shot, modular, dynamic, lineron-target cassette load. The cassette is designed to accelerate the liner up to 3 km/s at target impact. Further, it was modified to improve containment and reduce shot turnaround time while maximizing axial transmission of the 800 MeV proton radiography beam. A three-pronged modeling strategy was undertaken. First, dozens of one-dimensional, scoping MHD calculations with a coupled, reduced circuit model were conducted to validate circuit parameters against several liner, performance experiments. These experiments, conducted after maintenance and refurbishment, fielded multi-point velocimetry on the inner surface of the liner as well as redundant current diagnostics. Next, with validated circuit parameters a spatial-temporal magnetic pressure profile was constructed to drive a commercial (ABAQUS), 3D, FEM, engineering model of the new cassette design. This model revealed potential structural deficiencies in specific parts that were subsequently re-designed. Finally, 2D axisymmetric MHD calculations were conducted to confirm liner symmetry and performance at target impact.
