Design of an X-Band Inverted Magnetron Oscillator

The Air Force Reseach Laboratory has expressed the desire to develop, build and test a high-power (GW) X-band inverted magnetron oscillator (IMO) that operates with modest (300 kV) voltage. We will present our approach for design of the IMO slow-wave-strucure, much of which derives from previous work on relativistic magnetron theory [1]. The simulataneous requirement of modest operating voltage and operation in X-band presents challenges to the design that will be highlighted. A design inspired by the successful S-band, 1 MV IMO design of Ballard [2] will be described. Concepts and computational analysis of extractor designs will also be presented.
