Study of the Surface Phases Formation Features in the VT23 Titanium–Based Alloy During Quenching

To analyze the structure of the VT23 alloy after hardening by heat treatment, X–ray phase analysis methods were used in this paper. The phase state after quenching of this alloy in two different environments was studied: water and a high–pressure nitrogen flow. X–ray diffraction patterns of samples after quenching in these two modes are presented. The diffraction patterns of each sample were analyzed. As a result of quenching in water, titanium dioxide TiO
2
(rutile) was formed in the surface layer of the alloy. Quenching in nitrogen led to the formation of nitrides TiN, Ti
2
N, Ti
3
N
2
, Ti
4
N
3
on the surface of the alloy. The result of quenching in water and high–pressure nitrogen was the formation of oxygen and nitrogen solid solutions based on alpha–titanium with changed lattice parameters.
