Power Flow Control Strategy Based on Space Vector Modulation of a Three-Port Converter

Three-phase converters with dual dc ports and three input–output terminals have gained traction in various sectors due to their superior power density, cost-effectiveness, lightweight nature, and optimal efficiency. Conventional modulation techniques, notably space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM), encounter challenges in governing the power flow in such converters, primarily due to the fluctuations in dc source voltages and an imbalanced switching vector space. This study introduces a novel approach to power flow regulation by streamlining the vector space and conceptualizing innovative virtual vectors. These virtual vectors translate power distribution dynamics into a straightforward mathematical construct. By tweaking the virtual vector’s magnitude and orientation, it becomes feasible to regulate both the direction and amplitude of the power at each port, thereby simplifying overall power management. This work also delineates and quantifies the maximum power distribution potential across the dc terminals. Notably, our method facilitates two-way power circulation for both dc ports across an expansive voltage spectrum, enhancing the operational domain of the converter. Such advancements could potentially influence the design and control of analogous converters. The efficacy of the formulated strategy is corroborated with the help of a 3-kW laboratory prototype.
