Inductor Current Harmonic Analysis in DC-DC Dual Active Bridge Converter with Various Control Techniques

Dual active bridge converter is widely used in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, Data centers etc. due to the added advantages of inherent soft-switching, galvanic isolation and bidirectional power flow capability. Power flow is controlled by changing the phase shift angle between switching pulses of primary and secondary side converters. In this paper, design considerations of dual active bridge are presented along with different phase shift control techniques such as Single phase shift, Extended phase shift and Dual phase shift control technique and are compared on the basis of total harmonic distortion of the inductor current waveform which contributes to higher device stress and losses. Maximum achievable load with the given switching frequency and inductance is determined for optimized performance of the converter. The performance comparison of various control techniques have been performed in MATLAB/Simulink.
