Design, Modelling and Seamless Control of an Offgrid DFIG-Battery Energy Storage Based Wind Energy Conversion System for Remote Dwellings

This research work presents modelling, design and control of an off-grid doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and battery energy storage (BES) based wind energy conversion system for remote dwellings. Variability in generated power by the wind energy conversion system (WECS) makes it a challenge for microgrid operators to fulfill the power demand of connected local loads. Therefore, integration of BES along with power generated by DFIG together meets local demand. Any sudden fluctuations in generated power by WECS is absorbed by BES and it also stores excess generation of WECS for meeting demand in situations when WECS generation is low and load demand is relatively high. Moreover, system has capability to isolate DFIG stator at low/ very high wind speed conditions and feeds local loads using BES. As wind speed is reinstated within optimal speed range for power generation, system is connected to DFIG stator, which then feeds generated wind power to local loads. Complete design of wind turbine, DFIG and control of converters for this application is demonstrated in this research work and performance of proposed system is validated using developed model in Matlab Simulink R2017b software.
