Design and Implementation of Quadratic Boost Converter for Low Power Applications

This work presents the implementation of a quadratic boost converter employing a proposed pulse skipping modulation-burst mode, specifically for light-load applications. The quadratic boost converter is recognized for its high-gain operation, making it well-suited for many power applications. However, achieving low losses under such load conditions is challenging, as efficiency tends to decrease at lighter loads due to significant switching losses ($P_{switch}$). The paper encompasses a theoretical analysis of the proposed approach, with simulations conducted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to regulate output voltage. Simulation results demonstrate consistent regulation of voltage even when switching pulses are skipped using the proposed scheme. Additionally, the paper includes a theoretical analysis of inductor selection for Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM), where proposed scheme can be effectively adopted. To assess the feasibility of regulated output voltage during load steps transitions and input voltage transitions, the study conducts relevant experiments, revealing regulated output voltage with a ripple voltage ($\Delta v$) within the range of $\pm 5mV$.
