A Simulation Analysis of 30 kV / 5A DC Power Supply for Neutral Beam Injectors

The demand for high-voltage DC power supplies in particle accelerators and other research applications necessitates the development of reliable and efficient power supplies capable of delivering stable DC voltage and current outputs. This paper presents the basic design and simulation of a 30 kV., 5 A DC power supply for feeding the accelerator grids of neutral beam injectors (NBI). The key attributes of these power supplies are their low ripple content., low stored energy., and fast turn-on and fast turn-off which are highly essential for the successful operation of the NBI. A modular concept-based topology is proposed in which the power supply has been designed for varying the output voltbage over a wide range., from 10 % to 100 % of its rated output voltage by using the pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. The simulation results of the designed power supply are presented which have been carried out using MATLAB/Simulink. The results include both the steady state and dynamic response of the system along with fault analysis. All the technical requirements of the power supply were compiled through the simulation study.
