A Preliminary Study of Power Quality Issues Arising from Electric Vehicle Charging Systems

Power quality issues have been a significant issue in the power distribution system. The increasing use of electric vehicle charging systems in many homes can potentially lead to power quality problems. Therefore, this paper presents power quality issues arising from electric vehicle charging systems. This work focuses on the harmonic current and power factor of the onboard charging systems in EV and EV conversion charging systems. The harmonic current and power factor measurement results show that the %THD and power factor of EV charging systems follow IEEE standards 519–2014 and 1459–2010, respectively. However, the %THD of EV conversion charging systems exceeds IEEE standard 519–2014. Consequently, EV conversion charging systems can cause power quality problems in power distribution systems.
