Methodology for an Efficient Impact Assessment on the ITER Magnet System Exposed to New Thermal Loads From a Repaired Thermal Shield

The ITER magnet system requires a reliable thermal performance considering the most updated inputs from the different heat sources looking for a guaranteed safe superconducting operation under every planned plasma scenario. The ITER thermal shield, actively cooled by 80K gaseous helium, is the component in charge of avoiding large thermal radiation reaching the magnets surfaces from all the hot surrounding components. Consequently, every modification on the thermal shield design shall be assessed for quantifying its impact on the magnets system. Considering the current project context with extensive repair actions to be performed on the ITER thermal shield, this paper proposes methods that can be used for efficiently giving answers about the impact of those repairs in terms of new heat fluxes loading the different magnets and feeders surfaces. The obtained heat fluxes can then be used for detailed thermo-hydraulic analyses to be done in a next stage for a final validation of the proposed thermal shield repair technique. These methods are also relevant to support the future commissioning and operational phases, providing updated thermal radiation heat loads.
