Dissipativity-Based Robust Controllers to Restrict Line Power Flow Below Limit in Power System Networks

This paper focuses on developing a control scheme for regulating line power flow in power system networks in realtime, to address congestion issues. The proposed approach employs a dissipativity-based robust control strategy with the goal of maintaining power flows within a specified threshold, even in the face of challenges like generator outages, line failures, and variable renewable generation. In contrast to optimal power flow (OPF)-based techniques that rely on forecasted data, the proposed controller utilizes realtime measurements from phasor measurement units. This enables prompt detection of line overloading and automatic adjustment of generator or battery dispatch to keep power flow below predefined security limits. The study considers a polytopic uncertain linearized model of power flow dynamics and design robust controllers by solving a set of linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions. Simulations on a 16-machine 68-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in regulating line power flows. The results indicate that the designed controller can achieve regulation within 40–60 seconds, preventing transmission lines from overheating and thereby enhancing the overall robustness of the system.
