Strategic EV Charging and Renewable Integration in Texas

While electric vehicles (EVs) and climate-friendly energy sources are growing in prevalence across Texas, several challenges hinder the widespread adoption of EVs across the state. While acknowledging the environmental benefits of EVs, this paper focuses on power system stability issues, peak demand issues from unsynchronized EVs, and how charging EVs across the grid can be scheduled to correspond with renewable energy generation. To evaluate these factors across day-long simulations, this study uses dynamic time warping and k-means clustering approaches to group days given their total and net load. This clustering offers insights into daily electricity consumption and renewable generation patterns. The paper then finds optimal times for EV charging and vehicle-to-grid interactions based on load characteristics. These models are used to showcase the impact of intelligent decision-making on EV and renewable integration both for Texas and more broadly across other regions.
