Single-Particle model with thermal and electrolyte dynamics for lithium-Ion cell

The single-particle model, originally presented by Meng Guo [Electrochemical Society, 158 (2) A122-A132 (2011)], is extended to incorporate the effects of temperature and solution phase potential with electrolyte. In this extended model, the simplified nonlinear resistance of the solution phase is replaced by ohmic resistance, neglecting the electric resistance of the connector and the conductivity of the electrode in the solid phase. This replacement is achieved by expressing the resistance as a function of the geometrical parameters of the electrode, along with the effective conductivity of the electrolyte. The electrode overpotential is expressed as the combined sum of kinetic and diffusion overpotentials at both electrodes, disregarding the migration of lithium ions within each electrode's solid phase. The cell model estimates the terminal voltage and cell temperature during galvanostatic operation. The results of existing model taken as benchmark data. The results of the single-particle model for LiCoO2 exhibit an exceptionally good agreement with benchmark voltage data obtained from different discharge profiles (C/33, C/2, and C) and at different starting temperatures (15, 25, 35, and 45°C) of the cell.
